This month, we’re launching Mally Beauty, by celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. With more than twenty years of experience styling the likes of Beyoncé, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, Mally wanted to empower women with a line that was “easy to get right and would last all day.” Also launching in November, BH Cosmetics, a high-performance makeup collection of vivid eyeshadows and synthetic brushes and Nyx Cosmetics, high-quality professional makeup at an affordable price.

We recently sat down with Mally to learn more about her inspiration for her line and her favorite products at Kohl’s.

You started going to school to be a doctor. What made you decide to change course and launch a career in beauty?  

I always had a fascination with beauty and fashion, so I switched my major from pre-med to fashion. Becoming a makeup artist seemed like the perfect fit for the two worlds because I am given the opportunity to connect with people while making them look and feel beautiful.

What inspired you to start Mally Beauty?

Many of the products that we sell today originated as a need I had while working with celebrity clients. At the time, there were no highlighters available which is hard to imagine now that you can get all different textures from almost every brand!  I was breaking up eye shadows and blushes to create that glow. I discovered what works and what doesn’t for every face, pioneering expert application techniques that deliver instant transformation. All that was missing were the products to create the looks easily and flawlessly, which was why I created Mally Beauty.

You are a makeup artist to some of Hollywood’s top celebrities. How did you get into the celebrity makeup world?

My amazing agent Jim Indorato, who has been my agent since I became a makeup artist, encouraged me to take every single job. I started to get gigs doing magazine covers and editorial pages, which led me to the world of celebrity. The day that I met Beyoncé was a big changing point in my life. She had not a stitch of makeup on her face and her skin was glowing! Instead of creating the matte look that was popular at the time I decided to do something different. I put on a little concealer, a little mascara, some brow and played up the glow. We were done in ten minutes and Beyoncé said to me, “makeup takes two hours.” I said, “honey, with your face and my makeup it takes ten minutes!” Afterwards, I got a phone call from her publicist. She said, “Beyoncé loved the photos from the look you created and wants to know what you’re doing for the next year.”

Tell us about your beauty philosophy – “Empowering women everywhere to celebrate the differences that make them so fierce, fabulous, and amazing.”

My parents always told me, “What makes you different makes you beautiful,” and I have carried this motto with me throughout my life and dedicated my life to teaching women how to look and feel their very best.

Why did you choose to partner with Kohl’s?

I’m a Kohl’s girl! I shop there all the time for myself and my family earning that Kohl’s Cash! They carry fantastic brands in apparel, home décor, jewelry and beauty. Tell us about the Mally Beauty products that will be available at Kohl’s.

I work with celebrity clients who give it their all while performing onstage and they need makeup that will last! I created all Mally Beauty products to be high performance and long-lasting. What makeup advice would you give for the upcoming holiday party season – from office holiday parties to New Year’s Eve?  

For a party look I love a smokey eye. Metallic eyes are very in this fall and into the holiday season and it’s surprisingly simple to do! Women tend to get intimidated by the idea of a smokey eye but if you’re working with Shadow Sticks you can blend with your fingers, making it easy. Take the metallic color, cover the entire lid and then blend it out. Take a light shimmer shade and place in the inner corner of the eye and very lightly on the brow bone. Take a deeper metallic and work it into the crease. Blend, blend, blend! Then use your eyeliner to add definition and a few coats of mascara to finish the look.
