Kohl’s Gives $500,000 to Milwaukee Organizations for New Hometown Giving Program

Kohl’s provides grants to 28 local non-profits through Kohl’s Hometown Giving Program

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., (Jan. 23, 2018) Kohl’s (NYSE: KSS) today announced 28 local non-profits as recipients of a combined $500,000 in grants through Kohl’s new Hometown Giving Program. The organizations will use the funding for programs within Milwaukee County focused on areas such as poverty, safety and education.

"Kohl's was born and raised in the Milwaukee area, and we have a deep and long-standing commitment to supporting organizations that strengthen our community and make Milwaukee a great place to live and work," said Jen Johnson, Kohl's vice president of communications. "This year, we've added a new way to support local organizations that are making a positive impact for families throughout our region. We've been so impressed by the ingenuity and inventiveness of the proposals we've received. These esteemed non-profits are proof that big impact can be made by small groups of dedicated people focused on improving the world around them."

Launched in September 2017 with an initial call for grant submissions, the Kohl’s Hometown Giving Program allows Kohl’s to continue addressing vital community needs in addition to Kohl’s existing Milwaukee-area efforts. Local non-profits applied online for a grant ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, with $500,000 in grants offered.

  • Girls on the Run of Southeastern Wisconsin 

  • Great Lakes Community Conservation Corps

  • HEAR Wisconsin

  • Hmong American Friendship Association 

  • Hope House of Milwaukee

  • Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity

  • Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra

  • Public Allies Milwaukee

  • River Revitalization Foundation

  • Skylight Music Theatre

  • United Community Center

  • Urban Ecology Center

  • Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center

  • Walnut Way Conservation Corp.

  • Wisconsin Humane Society

The grants will be used for everything from the expansion of youth development programs with Girls on the Run to supporting an entire academic school year of literacy intervention efforts at a high-need Milwaukee school with City Year Milwaukee.  

Other supported programs include the development of urban produce gardens at Walnut Way Conservation Corp., in-school performances and performing arts workshops by Skylight Music Theatre, and the support of building 25 homes and rehabilitation of eight others for low-income homebuyers through Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity.
